Strange problems upgrading...

Postby jkroylance on Wed Feb 24, 2010 9:43 pm

I've tried following all the instructions I could find on upgrading Peek devices, tried them on 4 different computers (One has Windows 7 Ultimate, one has Windows 7 Home Pro, and two have XP SP3), tried to get the update to work on all 4 computers with my 3 Peek devices and I can't get it to work - it always fails in the exact same way. On the Windows 7 systems, I couldn't get the cable driver to work (not even the updated one from PeekFiles) - It would say "Device could not start (Code 10)". I did some scouring on the Code 10 error for Prolific USB devices and found a USB driver that said it was for some GPS serial cable that finally made my cable work. When I try to run the update and it says to turn the Peek on, do I wait for the "Hello" screen to go away then click OK, or do I wait until the red X on the antenna indicator goes away (I've tried both), or does it matter? Anyways, when I click OK to the "Turn your Peek on" screen, it immediately changes to the "Turn your Peek off" screen with no noticeable delay in between (is this normal?). So I turn the Peek off and click OK. Then it displays the "Reset your peek" screen - I've tried just pressing the power button, and also tried holding down the power button - at this point it brings up an error message saying "Can't connect to Peek". In the message box on the underlying window it always says "General loading error".

I poked around with HyperTerminal and found COM port settings 115,200 - 8 - N - 1 would give me some readable messages when the Peek was turned on. I made a small board that jumped the TX and RX line of the cable and used HyperTerminal to verify the cable would both transmit and receive properly. I've tried changing/disabling the buffer settings for the port which didn't help anything.

I don't know if its worth noting or not, but Peek #1 (mine, active) is Charcoal with firmware 1.04.00, Peek #2 (spare, unactivated) is Teal with firmware 1.04.00, and Peek #3 (wife's, active) is Cherry with firmware in the 1.08 range (can't remember the last 2 digits). I also tried upgrading to different versions - I tried the PeekProntoUpgrade from the original upgrade thread, found an upgrade to some variety of 1.08, tried the 1.09.18 update, and everything I try fails on all 4 machines with all 3 handsets in this exact same way. I'm at a loss as to what's going on with these, and its really driving me nuts!
